LODI, California (CNN) -- After Prince got hit by a car on Mother's Day, his owners brought the pooch into their yard and petted him, trying to revive him. He didn't wake up so they brought him to the pound.
The sad-eyed poodle mix appeared to be dead, so he was laid to rest in a freezer where the animal control department keeps dead dogs until their final disposal. But when pound master Earl Monroe opened the freezer Monday, Prince looked up listlessly and started walking around. Prince had spent 18 hours inside.
A veterinarian said Prince really had been knocked into a coma. His thick, matted hair provided insulation that helped Prince survive the freezer, said Dr. Penny Hodge, who treated Prince for an ear infection and freezer burn. Pound staff nicknamed Prince "Frosty the Freezer Dog."
