EDWARDSVILLE, Illinois (AP) -- If Cookie had her way, she'd probably bite the jar that fed her.
The stray 5-year-old boxer-Labrador mix apparently spent weeks running around St. Louis with a plastic cookie jar stuck on her head. The unwelcome headgear was cracked enough so she could breathe.
Cookie was on the loose until Thursday, when Lisa Welborn spotted the dog with four teen-age boys.
"The boys had been chasing her for two days on their bicycles through alleys and between houses," she said. "Finally, she just collapsed because she hadn't had food in so long."
The cracks in the jar that let Cookie breathe also allowed rain to seep in, making her helmet a foggy one.
"I couldn't even see her face," Welborn said.
Welborn, who used scissors to cut through the jar, said she thinks Cookie got stuck in the container while foraging through trash for food.
Cookie will be put up for adoption after getting some care from an animal shelter in Edwardsville.
"All in all she's coping very well," shelter business manager Susan Haddad said.
